What to Do for Thanksgiving When You are Alone?

When reading through many comments, blogs, and chats on this topic I found many people enjoy and even prefer being alone on Thanksgiving. In a society where our relationship with food is being explored and examined the movement towards looking at Thanksgiving in a different way seems reasonable. I know for our family we are trying to focus more on experiences as a family rather than gathering for food. If this is your focus this year here are some ideas for spending the holiday in a different way.

  • Spend some time being mindful of the gifts you have in your life and write these down.

  • Use the day to spend your time being intentional in caring for yourself and not in numbing behavior such as social media scrolling.

  • You can find ways to connect with others virtually if you are away from your family and friends.

  • Make it a self-care day.

  • Prepare or order food that feeds you in a fulfilling way.

  • Create a list of new traditions you want to honor for yourself.

  • Don't forget to be in the moment.

  • Find ways to serve in your community.

  • Seek out community Thanksgiving meals and see if you can serve or join in making other's days filling with gratitude.

  • If this is not the day you want to have think about ways to create connection for next year and ways you can reach that goal.

  • Plan a game day/night and spend time with friends.

  • Get a jump start on the holiday and watch some of your favorite movies.

  • Spend time outdoors walking, hiking, or going for a drive.

If you do want to be invited for a Thanksgiving meal and are away from your family here are some ideas to get that invite. Many people are happy to have others to share the day with them and there are likely others hoping for someone to share the day with.

  1. Be proactive. Call your friends, find your people, and create your own gathering.

  2. Explore what is available in your community for others to celebrate together.

  3. Take on a project where you can serve and meet others.

  4. Help others in your community such as at a food bank or shelter.

  5. Travel to be with those you want to spend the day with.

  6. Reach out at work, in person, or through social media.

However you want to spend the day we here at Hilltop Wellness wish you a day full of love, gratitude, kindness, and peace.
